Personality
When in reading mode, Maria gives an impression of rudeness/disrespect as she generally ignores others when they talk. She puts all her focus on reading; nothing else matters when she has a book in her hand.
Once she's seperated from her reading... okay lets be honest she still seems rude. Maria doesn't really care about most things, and always looks/sounds bored. If you can get her to talk anyway. The cam doesn't say much, and when she does it's the bare minimum.
If you can get her to talk, you've probably brought up something she likes (books) and she won't shut up. The clam is very passionate about what she loves (books) and could go on and on forever.
While she doesn't let others in easily, if you can crack her shell you've got yourself a friend who can keep any secret.

History
Everyone has a time in their life where peer pressure takes hold of them, and they do silly things they regret in their future. For some kids it's drugs, others sex. Maria's mother happened to fall into the latter position. Her friends teased her for being a virgin, how it didn't hurt and how it felt sooooooo good. And the more they talked about it, the more the huntail began to believe them. If these girls did the do and nothing bad happened to them, why wouldn't it be the same for herself? Once she found a boy willing to have sex with her, they... well.. did it.

About two weeks later, the huntail discovered she was pregnant. How could that be? They used protection hadn't they? Either way, a baby was in the oven and the girl was in a panic. What now? She didn't have the money to take care of a baby, she was still in high school for petes sake. Couldn't tell the boy that knocked her up either- it was just a one night stand, she didn't think he would care. She finally went to her parents, and after a long(lo n g) talk it was agreed that they would find a couple to adopt the child when they were born.
After days of searching, they found the perfect match. Famous fashion designer Odette Brown and her model wife, Danica, had been trying to adopt a baby for a few years with no luck. They were on the verge of giving up when Maria's mother contacted them, and everyone agreed it'd be best if it were a closed adoption. Once Maria was born, the clamperl was flown to her new home in Lumiose City, Kalos.
Maria's life was simple and routine. In the morning she would get lessons from her private home tutor, during the afternoon she'd travel with her mothers as they went on shoots, interviews, etc. It was the same thing every day, and after a few years Maria grew bored with her life. What her mothers did weren't interesting to her, and I mean... school is school. She didn't really have a hobby to distract her either- that is until she noticed a book sitting on a table at one of the shoots.
It was a simple fiction book, one of those with the predictable underdog hero defeating the villain and saving the girl. But it captivated Maria, she'd never read anything like it before.
And she wanted more.
She began asking for more books like what she read, spending all her free time reading them. At first her mothers were happy. Reading was a healthy activity, and at least it was something. But they began to notice that no matter where she went, Maria's face was practically pressed into the pages of her books. She wouldn't pay attention to anything or anyone around her, colliding into pokemon and objects alike. Someone would try talking to her, and she'd either only talk about her book, or flat out ignore them as she read. They tried getting her more involved with other things, but as soon as they'd turn around Maria would have a book in her hand.
Why wouldn't she talk to anyone? Where had they gone wrong? Was it because she was home schooled? They had only done it because she'd get a one-on-one experience, but if it caused her to miss out on making a friend... Maybe it wasn't too late. She could always be sent to school- but which one? They sent her to an expensive private school, thinking she would open herself up and make some friends. But after she was enrolled nothing seemed to've changed. She did meet other mon, but never really talked to them. Still in her books, just a new setting.
So they pulled her out of the school. Maybe that school was too similar to home- I mean she was surrounded by a bunch of rich kids. That type was so familiar... maybe she needed to meet others that were nothing like her. That's when they discovered Armonia, a public school that had a rich cast of all sorts of other pokemon in it.
So they sent an application  in, hoping this time their daughter would make a friend (or more... more would be nice).
